How to Protect Your Domain Name Brand

Your domain name is your brand. It is the solid identity of your online business or the personality of your organization.

Because the Internet is a perfect example of a free market wherein people can easily buy and sell stuff online, including domain names, it is important that you know how to protect your domain name brand.

Domain name brand protection is necessary for many reasons; one is to avoid what they call as “bleeding of traffic.” Bleeding of traffic means a website traffic that is supposed to go to your site but it goes to someone’s else after the site visitor makes an error in typing the URL of your site. Let’s say, you own the domain webhostingreality.com, but you don’t own realitywebhosting.com. There is a bleeding of traffic when site visitors accidentally type realitywebhosting.com although what they have in mind is that they really want to go to webhostingreality.com. To avoid this scenario, you may buy the other domain name.

Another way to protect your domain name brand is to buy all the .org, .net and .info domains. If you own a domain of webhostingreality.com, but you haven’t owned the .org, .net, and .info of this top-level-domain (TLD), you may be at risk of being overtaken by the popularity of your competitors (the other owners of the same domain) if those other domains would perform better in search engine optimization (SEO). As for this site, I haven’t done that. The three other TLDs are still available at Godaddy HERE.

There is also a suggestion that you buy the typo domains. Say you own google.com. To protect your brand and prevent bleeding of traffic, you should also buy gogle.com, googgle, or googol.com. Google has done that. Try it.
