For some unknown reasons, I lost my mscomctl.ocx (ocx stands for Active X Control) from C:WindowsSystem32 (for those who are using Windows XP).
Possible causes why you lost mscomctl.ocx which resulted to runtime error or severe disability of your software (In other words, some softwares in your computer won’t just run without mscomctl.ocx) are 1)you installed a rogue software; 2) you uninstalled a software that prompted you to remove a file in windows/system32 and you clicked “yes to all” 3)you deleted it accidentally. There are other possible causes that I may not be able to identify.
Solutions:
1. You need to install the Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Common Controls (download from Microsoft here). Install the package in your computer. If the error is solved after installation, then there is no need to proceed to step number two. The first fix did not work on my computer, so I proceeded to the next move.
2. First thank you to MajorGeeks. I got a copy of mscomctl.ocx from here. It’s a zip file. Just unpack it and upload it to your cwindowssystem32 (for windows xp user).
3. Now that the missing mscomctl.ocx has been uploaded into your computer OS, you need to manually register the file. So, click “Start” and command “Run”. Then type this command ( REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX ) – without the parenthesis. Hit enter; there you go – you’ll get a pop-up message saying that mscomctl.ocx has been registered in your computer.
Now you try to run any application/software that was paralyzed without the mscomctl.ocx. It took me three days to look for the solution to this problem. I was even considering of reinstalling Windows XP in my computer if I couldn’t find the solution. I am writing this post so that others may be able to get the solution here if they encounter the same common problem of “missing mscomctl.ocx and its dependencies.”
